Meeting new friends at the Cambridge Brewing Company

March 1st, 2010 · 5 Comments · Uncategorized

This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending a very cool beer tweet-up at the Cambridge Brewing Company (CBC). My reader Melissa emailed me about it and said her husband, Josh of Lost in the Beer Aisle, was organizing it and that it would be a fun opportunity to meet up. New friends + drinks… I’m in! :)

Now, I’m sure you noticed I don’t drink much beer. I used to in college, and a good amount at that, but after a while the watered down “light” variety was just not doing it for me anymore (the days of drinking to get drunk are over) and most strong beers are usually too hoppy or bitter for my taste buds. Once in a while my husband (who LOVES beer) gives me a taste of his pint and I really enjoy it but I’m afraid I’d get overwhelmed or bored with a whole one so I rarely order beer at bars and never do at restaurants.

I’m always up for trying new things, though, and CBC proved to be a great little local brewing company. The atmosphere was perfect for a blogger meet-up too… laid back, lots of space, lots of beer excitement and free rein to take as many photos as you want without anyone looking at you funny.

Quite a few beer enthusiasts showed up.

As I’m sure you’ve guessed from the name, CBC brews their own beers. Behind the bar, you could see the brewing equipment. I thought it added even more character to the space and of course we all knew the stuff we were drinking was very fresh.

There were 11 beers on tap. I told the bartender I liked fruity and wheat beers and he recommended the weekapaug gruit as well as the tripel threat. I remembered that I also recently started liking espresso stouts so I gave theirs a taste as well.

The espresso stout was delicious but the slight bitterness scared me from ordering a whole one. The weekapaug gruit was amazing, though! The bartender mentioned it was brewed with lots of herbs and Adam said it smelled like an herb garden. The sophisticated beer drinker that I am, I could not smell or taste herbs. I did however taste a slightly sweet, unhopped, smoooooooth beer. Lots of body too (can you say that about beer? I would for wine). I was in love!

Gorgeous, isn’t it? I had 2!

The hosts: Josh and Melissa. They were so friendly and fun. Loved meeting you both, guys!!

IMG_1859.JPG

There was even a raffle. I didn’t win anything but I do need to get my hands on some beer cookies they were giving out. They looked like hard mini pretzels and I’m totally intrigued now.

It was such a fun event! I met some cool people and discovered a new beer that I love. If they sold it in growlers, I’d take some home with me. Maybe that’s for the better – daily drinking is not something I’d like to start engaging in.

If you live in the area and haven’t been to the Cambridge Brewing Company, definitely check it out. Thanks again, Josh and Melissa for organizing this event. I hope there are many more to come! :D

Short break

Hi guys,

I’m trying to unpack our kitchen into the new space, so I’m taking a few days off blogging. I promise I’ll be back soon! :D

Have a great weekend!!!

3 steps forward, 1 step back

February 12th, 2010 · 19 Comments · Uncategorized, breakfast, oats, sandwich, snacks, tofu, yogurt

I had a bit of a breakdown last night. I forgot how much not following through my plans messes me up! I feel like this week I made so much progress. I (for the most part) stayed within my calorie range, diligently followed my training plan (with the necessary adjustments to allow for my twisted ankle to recover) and my confidence started building.  Last night a decision to skip an interval run brought me straight back to square one. I went to a yoga class during lunch as per my training schedule, but after work the couch seemed so inviting that I decided to just go home instead. Well the couch wasn’t available because we still had people working on our kitchen until 7:30, so what was supposed to be a lovely evening by myself (Adam had plans with his buddies), turned into me being “imprisoned” in my own bedroom, and then a mini-binge out of frustration. So it looks like I took 3 baby steps forward Mon-Wed this week and then a giant step back on Thursday. Urgh  I still can’t decide if I want to make up last night’s run today (it was supposed to be a rest day so I would have fresh legs for a long run tomorrow).  Regardless if I do or not, starting next week I’m going to modify the schedule to eliminate post-work runs. I just don’t want to go through the “talk myself into it” exercise every Thursday, you know?

Anyways, before the stupid binge (which included a bunch of pecans, a Mojo mountain mix bar, chocolate covered edamame and chips!! <– I never want those!) my eats were super delicious. Let’s review, shall we?

BREAKFAST

Overnight oats with banana slices, Kashi Golean cereal, walnuts and raisins + coffee

IMG_1373.JPG

Looks pretty but it wasn’t that exciting. I think overnight oats are just not for me. I’d rather have yogurt straight up… or hot oats. That’s just me :)

LUNCH

I was pretty proud of this one! It was so fresh and SO delicious (thanks to the sauce).  Spinach, broccoli, snow peas, shredded carrots, TJ’s organic savory baked tofu + almonds in Jenna’s spicy sesame noodle sauce (I made it ages ago).

IMG_0904

The sauce recipe made like a gallon and the stuff is caloric so I’ve been using only a tablespoon or 2 at a time.  I have been keeping the sauce in a Nalgene bottle and it was as fresh tasting yesterday as it was a year ago. Just opening the sauce bottle in the morning got me super excited about lunch! The sauce aroma is amazing – tahini + sesame oil really are a match made in heaven. :D

Saucy lunch…

Brownie anyone?

MID-AFTERNOON SNACK

PURE cherry cashew bar – love them!

DINNER

Another amazing meal – seriously prior to my binge I was eating like a queen!! Apple chicken sausage “dog” with honey mustard, pumpkin butter and fresh pear slices + baby carrots

IMG_1382.JPG

The star of the show… the perfect balance between sweet and savory.

IMG_1383.JPG

Before reading food blogs (and of course writing one), I would have never thought I’d like something like this. Good thing I’m more adventurous now – it was an incredible combination of flavors!!

The only thing that got documented as I was eating my weight in food…

KITCHEN REMODEL UPDATE

Our walls and ceiling are closed!! I can actually picture what the kitchen will look like now. It’s so open – I love it! We have less than a week left for it to be done (fingers crossed)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any fun plans for Valentine’s day? I think we’re going to wake up to the oh so romantic sound of kitchen remodeling.

Food photography taught by a pro

February 7th, 2010 · 18 Comments · Uncategorized

Yesterday afternoon, 14 Boston food bloggers met at Gary Tardiff’s culinary photography studio for a little seminar on food photography. I felt so lucky to be able to talk and learn from a pro like Gary. He was so passionate about his work and I was day dreaming there for a moment about what it would be like to have his job. ;) But anyways, here is a little recap of the whole day – I had a fantastic time and learned quite a bit. Let’s get to it!

So we all met at Gary’s studio around 2pm and got down to business straight away. Gary wanted to make the session as interactive as possible, but he also wanted to cover some basics. Bloggers listening intently…

IMG_1228.JPG

Gary had a chance to look at some of our blogs before meeting us, and mentioned that one of the most common mistakes he saw was out of balance white balance. I know my pictures definitely have that yellow tint to them when I take pictures indoors. I find it to be quite warm and at time fitting, but it’s definitely not always intentional. I’m still intimidated by my super fancy camera and by relying on the automatic mode, I am definitely letting my camera make all the choices – not me. Gary actually talked about that as well – he said he often shuts the auto-focus on his camera because he wants to be forced to do the right thing. He briefly talked about exposure, aperture, shutter speed – again the message was to play with your camera and find the perfect exposure for every picture. Food doesn’t move (usually) so you have a chance to change settings until you get it “just right.”

IMG_1229.JPG

Gary’s other “motto”:View with your eyes, not your head. He said we so often get emotional about what we see and overlook important details. On vacations, we may be so excited about finally seeing that waterfall, that we don’t realize our composition is completely wrong for that picture and we are not doing the setting justice (ps. – this was not the example he brought up – I’m just relaying the message). You can’t re-take that picture when you get home, so viewing with your eyes instead of your head will avoid awkward pictures you will regret later. Same goes to food – maybe you LOVE the plate you put your cookies on but the plate is washing them out and it’s all wrong for that particular photo. If you look at the photo and get your emotions about the plate get in the way, you overlook these details. Learning to train your eye to be critical over your pictures, instead of letting your head get in the way, will improve the quality of your pictures (you still have to do the work but at the end you’ll likely end up with the photo just the way you intended it to be…).

I guess those were the few messages from Gary. We then got a little tour of the studio. It’s also clearly about having the right props!

IMG_1241.JPG IMG_1243.JPG

How jealous is everyone of you bloggers about Gary’s plate collection?

IMG_1247.JPG

We were practically drooling over this stash… and these are his extras! His clients usually supply whatever he needs for the photo shoot.

Gary is also constantly on a lookout for different woods – he found this guy on a side walk somewhere. It sure would make for a beautiful rustic background…

IMG_1246.JPG

His food photos were all over the studio. Definitely pieces of art!

IMG_1245.JPG

And then we got to work! A few girls brought some food we could all practice on. Adrienne’s sourdough loaf was our first victim ;)

Camera…

IMG_1232.JPG

Lights…

IMG_1230.JPG

Action! Oh wait, we need to set it up first…

IMG_1234.JPG IMG_1237.JPG

Light from the back, shining through a vellum lined frame (for a softer glow), a few tweaks playing with shadows…

IMG_1239.JPG

And voila! (Gary’s picture looked much better, this was just a quick one from me)

IMG_1236.JPG

We did a similar set up for Kelly’s granola filled jar

IMG_1251.JPG

This one was a little more advanced because the clear jar would disappear in the background if you’re not careful. That’s why Gary added the black paper for the jar to reflect off something – see how the edge on the left is defined? The mirror on the left also brightened up the front of the picture by reflecting the light that was coming from the back. It was all super educational to see his thought process in action!

IMG_1250.JPG

One more quick set up with Jen’s m&m cookies

IMG_1254.JPG

Gary’s version of the picture…

IMG_1252.JPG

I learned so much! I don’t have this cool set up at home, but I think I am much more aware of light manipulation, shadows, etc…. and I need to learn how to use my camera so that my white balance and exposures are perfect! Lots and lots to learn and nothing makes it better than practice. Good thing I eat every day so there are plenty of opportunities for that ;)

We mingled a bit after the lecture and enjoyed some yummy treats. Jen’s cookies finally met their fate…mmm cookies

IMG_1257.JPG

Sophie brought some light Pavlova cookies

IMG_1259.JPG

And Lauren shared some of her homemade granola with us…

IMG_1261.JPG

I was starving and this little handful was perfect to tie me over until linner (lunch/dinner) :)

14 food bloggers united!!

Nicole, Lauren, Shannon, Cara, Jen, Kelly, Adrienne, Sophie, Jen, me, Kerstin, Chels, Mary Kate and Sues. Phew!

Thank you Kerstin for organizing this and thank you Gary for donating your time and knowledge to all of us. It was an amazing experience and I am even more motivated now to work on my photography and food styling skills so that I can make all my readers extra hungry!

PS. Gary, I see that Tatte is your client. Do you get free nut boxes?? I’m infinitely jealous!

What would you ask a professional food photographer?

Lights out

January 27th, 2010 · 11 Comments · Uncategorized

Our electric company, NStar ( ) disconnected the power to our condo today. Apparently, their records stated that apartment 1 (which is us) is our upstairs neighbors… so we’ve been paying their bill since August!!! Yeah, not cool. Not cool. This means we have no lights, no heat, no appliances and no internet (since the router is not working). I’m still at work (it’s past 10 pm) so I’ll only feel it at night when I’m freezing my butt off, but unfortunately that also means no real post today (I can’t upload pics at work).

Hopefully this mess is cleared out by tomorrow… and hopefully our hundreds of dollars of groceries do not spoil. Again…

In other news, have you bid on some baked goods for Haiti today? I think I won THREE different things. I’m all for satisfying my sweet tooth while helping a good cause. ;)
