A long run all by myself, I’m growing up!

February 22nd, 2010 · 17 Comments · chicken, running, sandwich, snacks, yogurt

My running partner in crime, Molly, is out skiing this weekend. How inconsiderate of her! I thought it would be a good opportunity to catch up on a run with Meghan who’s currently training for the Boston marathon, but the poor girl got injured on Monday and is taking the week off from running. For a second there I got nervous – I haven’t done a long run by myself since I met Molly. My longest run on my own was 7 miles last August. Instead of being discouraged, I decided that this was actually going to be a really good test for me. I’ve become a much stronger runner since those 7 miles. I’ve covered hundreds of miles – I could do this!!

[This ended up being a long recap - follow along at your own discretion ;) ]

I woke up an hour and a half before my planned run and had my usual toast with Barney Butter and banana (you’ve seen it a million times, click here for a visual if you need it ;) ). I was a bit nervous, but decided to just take it really easy. Slow and steady wins the race, right? Ok, no exactly… but it may make for a more pleasurable run. :D After a 1/2 mile warm-up walk (until my Garmin found the satellites) I got to it. I roughly planned out my route to make a 9 mile loop. I like running to a “destination” so there is something to look forward to. Also, this prevents me from deciding to cut the run short because I’m already so close to home. Today’s “destination” was the Jamaica Pond (in Jamaica Plain). I’ve done this run so many times and it never gets old. There are always so many runners and power walkers by the pond, no matter the weather, and I feel proud to be part of this little community. :)

So I took off, every time I looked down my Garmin said I was doing an 8:30-8:40 pace. I couldn’t believe it – it felt so easy! I know that usually when Molly and I run we talk the entire time. It makes the time really fly by, and we catch up on everything that’s happened in the past week. When we ran the half, we ran side by side, but didn’t talk, and our pace indeed was the pace I was running at today. I wasn’t complaining, that’s for sure! Around mile 3, I really wanted to stop and walk. Originally my plan was to run straight through – no stopping, but right around that mile 3 marker that seemed like a silly plan. So what if I stopped for just a minute? Would it really make that much of a difference? I bargained with myself and decided to take a walking break at the half-way point. Man, that’s a whole 1.5 miles away!! No, no – that’s negative thinking, I could do this!

Minutes after deciding to allow myself that walking break, I realized that I was running uphill. The second I hit flat ground, a walking break seemed like a silly idea. Now I really wanted to make it a full 9 miles without stopping, and this time I really did know I could do it. I ran around the pond twice, it’s fairly flat there and very beautiful. After the second loop, I was at 5.6 miles – the perfect time to run back home. I was smiling ear to ear at this point. OMG, I’m going to rock this run!!

By the way, I forgot to mention that this run was basically the exact same route that the BAA half follows (except I turned around 2 miles earlier). Around 7 miles or so, I was starting to slow down. My legs were starting to hurt a little. I was at the exact location that I started to really feel it during my half (it was mile 9 then). I distinctly remember Molly asking me if I wanted to walk for a minute or slow down… and I remember saying “I don’t know…” and kept running. I wanted to be stronger than that on THIS run. I pictured the point at which I thought I saw a 13 mile market (it was a 12-mile marker in fact). I wanted to get there, and I wanted to keep going. Remember, I was going to rock this run!! So I kept running and drinking water. I brought some orange slices with me for fuel, but I didn’t want them. I knew I could finish without them. I slowed down a bunch just to make sure I finished the run strong. Finishing the distance was my main goal. I didn’t care about speed. At the end, I was happy with both. I finished 9 miles in 1:22 hours – 9:08 minute average pace. I did it!!!!!! [Insert happy dance here  ]

After a good stretch and a shower, I met up with Coco for a celebratory brunch. I’m going to do a recap of that in a separate post because you are probably tired from reading. Here are the rest of the day’s eats.

Dinner parties are where it’s at

February 18th, 2010 · 29 Comments · breakfast, dessert, eggplant, entertaining, restaurant reviews, salad, snacks

When we were kids, meals were always prepared by the parents (most likely by mom). They were simple and satisfying, except for maybe that occasional vegetable you really would rather leave on the plate ;) For birthday parties and other celebrations, in my house my parents always prepared a giant feast (we actually had 2 large parties – one with all the kids, and a second one with all the adults – man, that’s a lot of prep!). If you are an American, the birthday parties were likely held at somewhere fun like Chuck E. Cheese. I never experienced such a thing.

In middle school, my family moved to Israel and the idea of take-out was introduced into my life. This was further solidified when we moved to the US, and most gatherings with friends were now at the local Dunkin Donuts or at someone’s house with a giant plastic container full of Chinese food. College was pretty similar, except alcohol was introduced into the mix – in large quantities at that.

Over the past few months, Adam and I hosted and attended a few dinner parties. There was no greasy, cheap food, no binge drinking – just a home-cooked meal with nice wine and a great conversation. Last night, on the way back home from such a dinner party, it hit me – this is what you do in your late 20’s (and probably well into your 30’s or until kids start ruining all your fancy plans)! I have to say – I’m really liking this new stage of my life, and I can’t wait to host more dinner parties at our own house soon!!

Before I get into the dinner party details, let’s quickly review the rest of the day’s eats – they were really good! :)

LUNCH DATE

The fun lunch date I mentioned last night was with the lovely Shannon of Tri 2 Cook. She joined me for a sweaty spin class and then we went to b.good. My salad from Friday finally convinced her to give b.good a go! I stopped myself from ordering the same thing and got the sesame ginger chicken salad this time – mesclun, carrots, jicama, edamame, sesame seeds, sesame sticks, orange-soy dressing

IMG_1598.JPG

The lighting there is horrible but hopefully you can see all the goodies in there… chicken + sesame sticks

IMG_1599.JPG

jicama, carrots, edamame…

IMG_1601.JPG

I really liked this salad as well. Shannon liked her b.good burger. :D

For dessert I stopped by Paradise Bakery and got myself a choc chip cookie. I <3 them!

IMG_1602.JPG

The salad + cookie combo held me over for 7 hours!! And now we get to the part where I tell you all about the dinner party Adam and I attended last night. :D

DINNER

So as you all know, we currently don’t have a kitchen to cook in. Somehow we were talking about that and Turkish food, and my co-worker Egemen offered to cook dinner for Adam and me one day. Hey, you don’t have to ask me twice! I’ve never had homemade Turkish food so this was quite a treat.

Egemen did a really great job setting up for dinner. There were lots of candles and some simple apps to munch on while he was finishing up dinner. Very cozy. His friends Margaret and Amanda joined us for the meal as well. We all loved the juicy strawberries and the cheese sampler.

IMG_1610.JPG

IMG_1612.JPG

I had a few glasses of wine with dinner. Here is my first pour.

IMG_1614.JPG

And now for the real treat – slow braised lamb + hunkar begendi (eggplant cream)

IMG_1615.JPG

Egemen really went all out! The lamb took 2 days to marinate + 3 hours to cook. It was really melting in your mouth – so tender! The hunkar begendi was the most unique eggplant dish I’ve had. It is a combo of roasted eggplant meat, flour, butter and mozzarella. SO good. You could really taste the smokiness of the eggplant. Now I miss my mom’s.

Dessert was another traditional Turkish dish – walnut and cinnamon stuffed figs (sorry, I don’t know the exact name) with vanilla ice cream and chocolate fudge

IMG_1620.JPG

This was very sweet and very cinnamony – a small portion was perfect to end the meal on a sweet note. Delicious! Thanks Egemen for hosting us – we’ll need to return the favor by cooking for you and the girls next time. :D

More giving

February 16th, 2010 · 17 Comments · breakfast, dessert, pizza, running, snacks

I wanted to start this post by reminding you guys that I will be donating 100% of my blog proceeds to a Haiti relief program, so please continue to click around and maybe even spread the word about it on your blog if you can. I just want to be able to donate as much as possible, but I can’t do it without your help. Thanks!

Speaking of donations to good causes, a friend of mine emailed me a few weeks ago about Taste of the Nation, a culinary benefit in Boston. I was lucky enough to get a few tickets. 100% of ticket sales from Taste of the Nation are granted to the most effective anti-hunger organizations working to end childhood hunger in America (click here for more event details). I think this will be a really spectacular event, so if you are in Boston, please consider purchasing tickets. Donations that reward you back with yummy food are my favorite kind. :)

Now onto today’s eats…

WORKOUT

I had 5 miles on my training schedule for today, and I really had a hard time talking myself into going to the gym. I realized that as much as I LOVE my long weekend runs with friends, I have a hard time with mid-week runs on the treadmill. This is not a physical constraint, btw, I just really have to continue convincing myself to keep going (it starts with getting to the gym, and then actually staying at the gym). All in all, the run was hard, but it was actually really good. I planned on staying at 6.8 mph and varying inclines. 6.8 used to be my warm-up/”resting” speed. I am not there anymore, but I hope with continued training to get back to this level of running fitness and even exceed it! I completed my planned 5 miles and stayed right around the target speed, speeding up at times when I had more energy and slowing down when I needed a little break. I felt fantastic after finishing! Hopefully I will remember this wonderful feeling on Friday afternoon (my next planned run). :D

LUNCH

I had no time to make a real lunch this morning so that’s why you see a very ugly collection of ingredients here. The truth is, it was actually quite tasty.

DINNER

When you’re low on groceries and want something quick, make a tortilla pizza!

TJ’s flour tortilla with whole wheat, TJ’s organic tomato sauce, organic pizza cheese blend, roasted rosemary chicken + avocado

IMG_1574.JPG

I know I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again. TJ’s organic tomato sauce (in a can) makes the best pizza sauce! It is so flavorful. I love love love it. The roasted chicken was courtesy of my PILs. Also, have you ever had avocado on pizza? It’s pretty awesome!

Open wide!

IMG_1579.JPG

While eating dinner, I was watching the Food Network ice cream challenge. Instead of 2 little truffles I planned on having for dessert, a frozen chocolate covered banana seemed more appealing. Can’t wait for some truffles tomorrow though. :)

Sweet Valentine’s day

February 14th, 2010 · 7 Comments · breakfast, dessert, product reviews, salad

I’ve had the best Valentine’s Day weekend this year, and it’s not even over!!! Adam is taking me out tonight to a (supposedly) very romantic French restaurant, Chez Henri, but in all honestly I already feel like this weekend could not be more perfect! It involved some really great workouts (an 8 miler yesterday with my favorite running partners – my sister and Molly, and a kick-ass boot camp class today with my sister and her boyfriend), a date with a friend I haven’t seen in over a year (hi, Kathy – hope you found the blog!) and quality time with my family (mom, awesome dinner last night.. mmm gorka) and Adam’s parents. Speaking of Adam’s parents, they are too cute for words. They insisted on dropping by today to hand deliver a little Valentine’s day gift for me us. :)

IMG_1545.JPG

These are Black Dinah Chocolatiers truffles

IMG_1547.JPG

The company firmly believes in sustainable agriculture – all chocolate used to make the truffles is organic and fair-trade. The fillings are inspired by local (Maine) ingredients. My parents in law (who have a house in Maine) were telling us that the owner goes to the farmers market every week and incorporates all the fruit, nuts and flowers purchased there into her chocolate treats. I am SO all about this kind of business. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Jim and Jane! I promise to savor every bite (and maybe share a few with Adam if he’s lucky  ). Just thinking about these little gems puts a big smile on my face!

I had 2 right away…

IMG_1550.JPG

The milk heart truffle supposedly had pistachios and hints of rose. I couldn’t tell. Nonetheless, both truffles were so fudgy inside and perfectly fresh. Absolutely incredible!!! Kate, the Black Dinah Chocolatier, was also recently featured in the Martha Stewart magazine. Have any of you seen that article? Pretty cool. :)

All right, all right – I’m pretty sure I can go on forever about chocolate, small businesses (and how I love them!) and sustainable agriculture, but I have a few other eats to share with you that were consumed earlier in the day.

First there was the coffee date at Starbucks with my friend Kathy and her husband Pat. It was SO good to see them. You know those friends that you may not see for months or even years, and then just pick up from where you left off and everything is just so easy? Kathy and I clicked from the first time we met our freshman year in college and I’m so sad she lives hours away. Kathy, we need to meet up somewhere in the middle soon. I want a girl-date with you!! Breakfast included a tall coffee with milk and 1 packet of sugar…

IMG_1536.JPG

+ an eggwhite, spinach, sundried tomato and feta wrap

IMG_1537.JPG

IMG_1538.JPG

The egg white wrap was actually pretty good! There wasn’t much spinach or sun-dried tomato but the egg whites were nice and fluffy and I really liked the actual wrap. At 280 calories, this is a great healthy breakfast option if you’re on the go.

After our breakfast date, we picked up my sister and her boyfriend and headed to the gym for a boot camp class. Inna’s boyfriend, Derek, actually requested that we go. Hey, I wasn’t going to object! ;) The boot camp class was crazy. The instructor decided to do something different today. Have you ever heard of 10 by 10/ 100 workout? You basically have 10 sets of 10 exercises with 10 reps of each. That’s 100 reps per exercise. We did 2 of those blocks (so 20 exercises * 100 reps = 2000 reps – whoa!). It moves FAST. My heart was pumping like crazy just because there was no break at all, until you were done with all 10 sets. Holey moley. All three of us loved it! Yup, we are masochists. ;)

I came home to make a small lunch. I kind of had a feeling my parents in law had some dessert in store for us. :D

Mixed greens, fresh broccoli, shredded carrots, TJ’s savory organic baked tofu, goat cheese, artichoke antipasto, and Jenna’s spicy sesame noodle sauce

IMG_1539.JPG

The artichoke antipasto was definitely the star ingredient. The baked tofu is pretty awesome as well. :)

IMG_1541.JPG

My PILs also brought us some homemade food that does not require a microwave. Sweet!

IMG_1552.JPG

Cold cuts calzone - whole wheat dough, reduced fat cheddar, natural meats

IMG_1553.JPG

Pasta salad - whole wheat organic pasta, olives, grape tomatoes, asparagus, radicchio, fresh spinach and peppers in EVOO + light mayo

IMG_1554.JPG

I nibbled on these to tie me over until dinner. Speaking of which, it’s time to get prettified ;) See you guys tomorrow with a restaurant review. I also owe you 2 other posts (yesterday’s foods – ALL blog worthy) + Friday night’s dinner. So much food, so little time. Hope you’re all having a fantastic weekend!!

Helping Haiti

February 11th, 2010 · 15 Comments · breakfast, product reviews, sandwich, turkey

My 5-year old nephew came home from pre-school last night and said this to his mom: “Mommy, you should stop going out to restaurants so we can have more money to donate to Haiti!” How cute is that?

Adam and I already donated to several relief programs. The most delicious donation came through the Bake Sale for Haiti. Last week I received some yummy peanut butter chocolate chip cookies that I bid on and won. Today I got another package with brownies prepared by Stan (he has no blog but generously donated his time and baking skills for a good cause). Thank you, Stan – the brownies are really fabulous!! I am expecting some granola bars in the mail tomorrow as well. Donations can be so delicious! ;)

IMG_1359.JPG

IMG_1361.JPG

So yes, I feel like my small family of 2 has done just a little to help a good cause, but I want to do a bit more. I’ve decided to donate 100% of this month’s blog proceeds to a Haiti relief program (I will do more research over the coming weeks and will mention the exact program the money will be donated to). So now is your turn to help! Click away on my blog, press the refresh button a few times, spread the word about this so others can come here and get a few clicks in. Any page views from February 1 through February 28 will count. The more impressions I get, the more I can donate to a Haiti relief program at the end of the month. It will cost you nothing! Thanks, guys!

Now onto today’s eats…

BREAKFAST

Yesterday’s breakfast pizza really hit the spot. I decided to give it another go with different toppings this time. Today’s breakfast pizza was topped with Barney Butter, nonfat yogurt, pear slices, Zoe’s granola and pecans

IMG_1351.JPG

It got a little too crispy, but still SO good! We may have a new breakfast favorite around these parts ;)

WORKOUT

On my training schedule today was “4 miles fast.” My ankle felt fine again so I decided to make it happen. I was a bit nervous on my way to the gym. Why do I get nervous before my runs? Such a strange feeling! I guess I don’t want to disappoint myself. I started with a 15 minutes abs class and then got on the treadmill. I wanted to average a 7.0 mph pace. I warmed up at 6.5, then went to 6.8, 7.0, 7.2, then down to 6.8, and up to 6.9, 7.0 and 7.1 (alternating inclines from 0 to 0.5 to 1.0) and then down again to 7.0. 6.9, 6.8, 6.7, 6.5. It was a really hard run!! I wanted to give up so many times. My head was doing most of the psyching out and I just kept on mentally picturing finishing strong and how proud I’d feel after I’m done. I knew I was in a good enough shape to handle 4 miles. And oh yes, I felt proud upon finishing!! I definitely did not average 7.0 but the inclines made the run harder than if I stayed flat at 7.0 the entire time. I love workouts like these!! Tomorrow on the schedule – yoga at lunch, an interval run after work. Should be interesting…

LUNCH

V8 tomato soup + TJ’s Reduced Guilt fillet of sole with butter beans & spinach

IMG_0889

Now this was definitely the ugliest lunch of all lunches. I took close-up shots but I’ll spare you. Not pretty. The filet of sole was also SO bland. That’s what majority of Americans (and apparently TJ’s chefs) feel healthy food tastes like. Very disappointing. You and me know that healthy food can be flavorful and craveable!! The soup was pretty yummy; I also had 2 AK MAK crackers with it and this portion of lunch was definitely better than the fish.

As I was finishing the above pictured eats, my brownie package arrived. I couldn’t be happier!! I dug right in and shared a bunch with some co-workers. We were all happy campers. The brownies were crispy on the outside, soft on the inside – lots of choc chips inside as well. So so yummy. It was hard for me not to keep digging into the box. I did ok there for a while.

MID-AFTERNOON SNACK

DINNER

Star ingredient of dinner:

IMG_1355.JPG

It’s a mixture of artichokes, olive oil and garlic. I’m in love! Dinner’s panini had a few spoonfuls of the artichoke antipasto, turkey, laughing cow cheese and dijon mustard on TJ’s ww Tuscan pane

IMG_1352.JPG

+ a garlic sour pickle for good measure  Pickles are vegetables, right?

IMG_1357.JPG

[345 calories]

And then I opened the box of brownies to show to Adam….. and ended up eating another THREE!!! Not my proudest moment.

IMG_1364.JPG

[estimate: 480 calories]

I put one in my lunch bag for tomorrow and the rest went in the freezer.

Total calories consumed: ~1930. I wish it was lower, but I’m probably around break-even for the day with my calorie burn at the gym so I’m not beating myself up over it either. The brownies were goooooood

Have you made any charitable donations lately?
