Holey Donuts review + giveaway

June 6th, 2009 · 129 Comments · product reviews

It’s been a few days since my last post, but I have some yummies to share with you + a giveaway… so really, I think I’m redeeming myself quite well ;) As you can see from the title of this post, today I’d like to talk about Holey Donuts. I’ve seen them around a few blogs since trying them for myself, but everyone got a bit of a different variety in their “care package” and I absolutely have to share my new found love with you regardless of whether you’ve seen these before or not ;)

So Holey Donuts are low fat gourmet donuts. They’re all hand made with high quality ingredients… and the best part is that they are not fried and taste amazing!! Oh yeah, and they’re 100% natural – no crazy artificial sweeteners snuck in there. Awesome!

So after the Company agreed to send me some of their donuts to try (yes, I emailed them. I’m shameless), I was SO excited. I mean, you guys all know how ridiculous my sweet tooth is, and these donuts sounded like they were right up my alley. I could eat these and be healthy and sane? Yes, sounds like something I had to try! When I finally got the package, though, I was quadruply excited… they sent me FOUR packages of donuts! I mean, that was beyond generous!! Just look at the loot…

Someone in my household couldn’t wait for me to snap a photo before grabbing a few of these babies;)

Pretty gorgeous, huh? Oh yes, I could not wait for the next morning to dig in! The next morning came and my husband and I had our first round of our filled donuts. We started with the reduced fat blueberry crumb cake donuts. I actually couldn’t tell from their frozen state what they were, so it was like a little surprise once I finally bit in. Here is the donut in it’s frozen state:

After microwaving it for 30 seconds, it got ooey gooey and irresistible…

And here is the filling inside:

This donut is 218 calories, 3.8 grams of fat vs. Dunkin Donut’s similar donut at 290 calories and 16 grams of fat. The sweet frosting was sweet, just like a coffee cake. The filling was well balanced. I used to LOVE blueberry preserve filled donuts at Dunkin Donuts about 12 years ago (when we first moved to the States). Every single Saturday morning, my dad would drive to DD and pick up a box of donuts for us to feast on when we wake up. I was so sad when they discontinued the blueberry filled donuts (although retrospectively, I think it was a blessing in disguise!). Well this donut brought me right back to those good old days and I loved it! I licked my fingers clean :)

Here is what Adam said after his first bite: “Oh, wicked good! There is no way it’s 218 calories. How do they do that? I don’t believe it – seriously it tastes like a million calories!!” I guess that’s a good thing ;)

That night I sampled a few of the low fat cinnamon glazed donut holes.

Four donut holes are 158 calories and 3 grams of fat vs. traditional donut holes that have 220 calories and 10 grams of fat. They tasted like mini-cinnamon buns, and I loved that these 2 little guys were less than 80 calories! A perfect after dinner dessert without breaking the calorie bank :) Here is a little dialogue Adam and I had after trying these…

Adam: “These are…. incredible! Seriously – amazing!”

Elina: “I think we’re going to be addicted. There may have to be another order in our future.”

Adam: “Oh yeah! Definitely!” *Side note: I’m ordering more after finishing this post*

Next up… jumbo reduced fat cinnamon buns.

Perfect with a large mug of coffee!

These were delicious! Not greasy tasting at all and did not weigh me down. I had one a little before going to a 90 minute yoga class and it perfectly fueled me for this workout without making my stomach angry at me. The tiny chunks of apple in there were a little weird, though – I didn’t taste the apple until the end when I saw the tiny chunks and recognized them as apples. These would definitely satisfy a craving for a cinnabon bun, especially if you sprinkle some pecans over one! Yum!! :D Oh I should mention that these buns were 340 calories with 5 grams of fat, where a classic cinnabon bun is between 730 and 810 calories and 24-32 grams of fat (depending on the source used). A pecan caramel cinnabon is 1,100 calories with 56 grams of fat. Now those are some seriously scary numbers!! (And I know I’ve had those pecan buns before – yikes!!)

Over the weekend we had my father in law for breakfast and shared some Holey Donuts love with him. We had a little donut spread:

From the front, clockwise: reduced fat coconut cream pie donut, strawberry glazed donut, jelly donut (can’t find the official name for this last one).

I tried 1/2 of the coconut cream pie:

I was SO excited about this one, but I have to say I was kind of disappointed. For the first time this donut tasted low fat and kind of like bread with frosting and filling. I think I made a mistake on this one, though – I think microwaving 3 donuts together threw the timing off. It was a little cold still when I had my first bite, so I brought it back to the microwave and then it was too hot. I may give this guy a try again some day. We sent one to my mother in law, and she said it was very decadent, so if you ever try this kind (or have tried this before) and love it, I wouldn’t be surprised. Let me know if you do!

The strawberry frosted donut (158 calories, 3 g of fat) on the other hand was fantastic (I had this on a different day)! I thought that a donut without filling would be kind of boring in comparison, but I was definitely wrong. The frosting tasted really like fresh sweet strawberries – no fake tasting sugary stuff here. And the sprinkles made it super fun :) Doesn’t this donut look like Homer Simpson’s favorite? ;)

Last donut I tasted was the jelly donut (again I really don’t know what it’s officially called – the boxes were not labeled). Here it is all gooey post microwaving. *Warning, the filling inside was about a million degrees and sprayed out of the donut after I took my first bite. It almost took my eye out*

Insides:

Ok, so this one was WAY too sweet. I couldn’t handle it, so I made a little PB&J yogurt concoction with it to balance out the sweetness. Much better!

Phew, that was a lot of donuts to talk about. I had a blast tasting these and will definitely be ordering them again (like today!). All this donut talk really got me in the mood for a donut and after seeing some of the comparables I don’t think I’m indulging in the “real thing” any time soon. These are a bit pricey but I believe the quality and nutritional superiority definitely justify a few extra bucks for a box. These are not health food by any means. They still use white sugar and white flour, but the donuts are delicious and low fat, so I say they’re a great way to trick your body into thinking you’re eating something that you really shouldn’t! I’m a big fan :D

All right, all right, enough talking about donuts. How can you get your hands on them? Well of course you can order some from their website. But you can also enter my giveaway for a chance to win 2 dozen of Holey Donuts! Here are the rules (you have 3 chances to win!):
